ABOUT NIGERIA SPELLING BEE

The Nigeria spelling bee is one of the biggest and best spelling bee competitions in Nigeria. Yearly, thousands of students across different age groups and classes within the federation register and participate in the competition. The competition s one of the few spelling bee competitions that presents students with the opportunity to compete at the international level (African Spelling bee). It is also one of the few spelling competitions in Nigeria that do not make students over-dependent on a word list. It is a spelling competition that if as a student you are able to come out as one of the winners, you should be very proud of your achievement and see yourself as a spelling genius, especially for the fact that you didn’t depend on a word list to come out top. It shows your spelling prowess. Although, Nigeria Spelling bee provides participants with a study guide but the words in it should not be depended on as it would sparingly be used or not used at all.

HOW TO REGISTER FOR NIGERIA SPELLING BEE

To register for Nigeria spelling bee, interested individuals, should visit their official website (www.nigeriaspellingbee.com). While on the website, there are contact details to either call or send WhatsApp message. Also, at the top of the website, there is a β€œcalendar” section. Click on it to see the date and venue for the next competition in your state.

Payment for registration is usually done online on the website. After registration, registered participants gets a feedback message on their Email containing the submitted details as well as spellers tag number. The tag number is usually started with the letter β€œJ” for Junior spellers or the letter β€œS” for senior spellers. A Junior speller may have the tag number β€œ J – 123” while a senior β€œ S – 456”.

Payments are made online via available payment gateways. After payment, at the point of registration, the depositor is expected to fill in a section of the Registration form with the payment details. In some cases, late registration at the venue of the competition is allowed.

On the day of the competition, accreditation is carried out early enough before the competition kicks off proper. Registered spellers are expected to arrive early at the venue to confirm their online registrations as well as get their tag numbers. It is expected that registered participants come with their payment slip for physical confirmation even after uploading or submitting payment details online.

IS THE COMPETITION OPEN TO ALL CLASSES?

The Nigeria spelling bee is an age grade spelling competition and is open for spellers between the Ages of 9-13 (Junior spellers) and 14-16 (senior spellers). The Junior Spellers in some cases are further grouped into primary spellers and Junior secondary spellers. The primary spellers are usually around the age of 9. As previously mentioned, Junior spellers are identified with their tag numbers beginning with the letter β€œJ” while senior spellers are identified with their tag number beginning with the letter β€œs”.

IS THERE A WORD LIST?

After registration, a study guide is sent to the Email of every registered participants. The study guide contains a list of words as well as short information on understanding how words from various origins (Latin, French, Italian, Spanish, etc) are formed.

Indigenous words (Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa) are also included in the study guide but the broader picture is this; the words on the word list are usually not used, they are only meant to give you a clue or hint on how spelling bee words are and so, the study guide should not be over-dependent on. Spellers who aim to win the competition are expected to read and study wide with other available resources such as :

WHAT ARE THE PRIZES GIVEN TO WINNERS

Usually, 1st place winners at State level automatically book a slot at the national finals where other qualified spellers from different States in Nigeria meet to compete.

For 2nd and 3rd place winners, the possibility of them participating at the National Finals is dependent on the number of representatives (slots) each State is required to present at the national Finals. If there are enough slot to accommodate 2nd and 3rd place winners, then they would also need to participate at the national finals but if not, they only get a medal.

1st place winners at State level gets a medal, a trophy and a handbag containing books and a document containing details for the National final.

1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at the National level gets to represent Nigeria at the African spelling which usually features several African Nations . Aside representing Nigeria at the African spelling bee, they are also given the following prizes.

  • ₦1,000,000.00 in Scholarship (Senior)
  • ₦500,000.00 in Scholarship (Junior)
  • Laptop and Educational Materials for Champion Schools
  • An opportunity to represent Nigeria at the African Spelling Bee (available to ALL FINALISTS.)
  • Additional ₦1,000,000.00 Scholarships upon emerging African Spelling Bee Champion (available to ALL FINALISTS).
  • Nigeria Spelling Bee Ambassador for life.
  • Trophy and Medal.

1ST RUNNER-UP

  • ₦500,000.00 in Scholarship (Senior)
  • ₦300,000.00 in Scholarship (Junior)
  • An opportunity to represent Nigeria at the African Spelling Bee (available to ALL FINALISTS.)
  • Additional ₦1,000,000.00 Scholarships upon emerging African Spelling Bee Champion (available to ALL FINALISTS).

HOW TO PREPARE FOR NIGERIA SPELLING BEE

After registration, it is advisable to go through the study guide particularly for the purpose of learning hint on how words of various origins are formed. Despite the fact that it was mentioned that the words in the word list would not be thoroughly used, it is still important that you practice them,.
