History Made! – 11 Years Old set to be the First Nigerian representative at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

On Friday, 14th of January, 2025, a groundbreaking achievement was made in the history of Nigerian Spelling Bee as an 11 Years old Nigerian Student Named Amazing-Grace Salami came out top in the midst of 63 other Exceptional Spellers who competed at the Final of the Maiden Edition of the Spelling Bee in Nigeria (SpIN) Contest. The Competition Started in August with 200 participating Students.

The Spelling Bee in Nigeria (SpIN) Contest is a spelling competition recently introduced to the Nation in order to provide Nigerian Students with the Opportunity to compete among themselves and the winner would proceed to Washington DC in the United States of America to compete at the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee which is held annually.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is the oldest and Most Prestigious Spelling bee competition in the World. It has been in existence since 1925 and would bee a 100 years when the 2025 Edition is held later this year.

This Year’s edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition would feature a representative from Nigeria for the first time since Inception as young miss Amazing-Grace Salami would be lifting the country’s Flag high at the tournament.

The 11 years old from Greenspill International School in Abuja came out top in the SpIN spelling contest, ahead of 2nd placed Ifeoluwapo Okuboyejo and 3rd placed Naomi Ocucio. Her Winning word (Championship word) was “melange”.

The three Spellers were rewarded with the following prizes.

AMAZING-GRACE SALAMI (1st place)

  • A trip to Washington DC to represent Nigeria at the Scripps National Spelling Bee
  • $500 spending Money
  • Trophy and Gold Medal
  • Indomie Products
  • One year Merriam-Webster Dictionary Subscription worth $10,000

CLAIRE IFEOLUWAPO OKUBOYEJO (2nd place)

  • Silver medal
  • $100 spending money
  • Citations
  • Invitation to attend the Centenary Scripps National Spelling Bee
  • Automatic Semi Final Spot for Next Edition of SpIN
  • Citation of recognition
  • N20,000 Worth of Novel

NAOMI OCUCIO (3rd place)

  • Bronze medal
  • $100 spending money
  • Citations
  • Invitation to attend the Centenary Scripps National Spelling Bee
  • Automatic Semi Final Spot for Next Edition of SpIN
